Kobyz is a Kazakh bow-instrument. It is made by wood. Kobyz is tuned in fourth or fifth. This instrument is known from 8 century. Father of kobyz was Korkyt. Narrator (zhirshi), singers (anshi) and shamans played in this instrument. Kobyz is divided into kyl-kobyz (which is made from wood and its strings from horsehair), first violin (it is improved instrument, it has 4 metallic strings also it has violin fiddlestick). Akhmet Zhubanov academician who established Kazakh National orchestra named after Kurmangazy improved this instrument at the beginning of 20 century. Nowadays first violin class is in the National conservatoire named after Kurmangazy.
